This week we opened Adelaide’s first free supermarket in response to skyrocketing demand for food relief amidst the cost-of-living crisis. The new OzHarvest Market in Hindmarsh will provide fresh produce, pantry items and cooked meals to people in need on Tuesday (10am – 2pm), Wednesday (3pm – 7pm) and Thursday (10am – 2pm).

The market model is based off our successful model in Sydney and the concept is simple: OzHarvest rescues surplus food from local supermarkets and food businesses to keep the shelves stocked, so those in need can access nutritious food, free of charge.

Our Founder Ronni Kahn AO said nearly 80% of the charities we support in South Australia are experiencing an increased demand for food. “This is the toughest it’s ever been. Our charity partners tell us that people are desperate, with so many new faces needing help for the first time in their lives. The OzHarvest Market is a one-of-a-kind model where anyone in need can come and be served by our wonderful volunteers with dignity and respect.”

We’re doing our best to meet record levels of demand and invite those who have the time to join as a volunteer, and for those who have the means to consider donating. A $1 donation enables OzHarvest to deliver 2 meals to those in need.

The OzHarvest Market is open now next to OzHarvest Adelaide’s warehouse in Hindmarsh at 25 Manton St, Adelaide SA 5007 and was made possible thanks to the generosity of our supporters including Woolworths and Higgins.
