OzHarvest Adelaide has been getting good food to people in need since 2011. Every week, our four vans named Daisy, Lily, Chino, and Billy, rescue around 3,500kg of quality surplus food, and deliver more than 40,000 meals to people in need throughout Adelaide.
In the wake of COVID-19, the Adelaide introduced four new food relief initiatives to meet the rise in demand. More than 4,000 food hampers have been created and distributed to vulnerable communities since March 2020 to date. This included international students from June to August 2020. Working with local ‘hospitality heroes’ Adelaide Oval, Parliament House, The Food Print Experience and amazing volunteers in the OzHarvest kitchens, over 30,000 nourishing meals have been cooked and delivered.
From March-August 2020, food relief was extended to 12 regional areas of South Australia, helping 1,300 people and for two months a Mobile Market provided food hampers to 800 people. 12 additional charities are now being supported including charities in the Adelaide Hills bushfire region.
We would not be able to do what we do without our amazing team of over 240 volunteers who are part of our OzHarvest ‘Yellow Army’! Our volunteers provide much needed support for our Victorian programs contributing over 5600 hours of their valuable time! There are so many ways to get involved from assisting our drivers with food rescue in our iconic yellow vans; helping with community events, assisting in the kitchen at Cooking for a Cause corporate classes and providing hands on support for the delivery of our education programs; NEST and FEAST programs.
Shifts are generally Monday to Friday during business hours, however we do have occasional out of hours events, such as Bunnings Sausage Sizzles or community festivals. If you are interested in joining the Adelaide team, we’d love to welcome you to the OzHarvest family! Please click the button below for more details.
FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training) is a curriculum aligned program aimed at year 5 and 6 students. FEAST runs for 7-10 weeks and is a STEM project-based learning program focusing on food and sustainability. The teacher-led program can be adapted and changed to suit your school’s needs.
Like any good FEAST, it’s designed to be fun, engaging and filled with good food.
OzHarvest’s Nourish program supports at-risk youth by training and mentoring students in a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations. Nourish offers more than just hospitality skills as it creates hope, opportunity and supports employment pathways for self-sustainability.
Our NEST program is an easy and fun way to learn healthy eating habits and how to cook simple and low-cost meals in just six weeks. Each NEST session is held at the same day and time each week for 2.5 hours. It includes fun interactive activities, practical cooking classes, and the sharing of a meal together.
OzHarvest NEST is aligned with the Australian Dietary Guidelines and works with everyone to set realistic goals around healthy eating, which are reviewed and revised each week, so real and lasting change can be made.
