Icon Water and OzHarvest toast a new partnership on World Food Day

by

Icon Water and OzHarvest Canberra have marked World Food Day by signing a new three year partnership.

“As the Capital Region’s water utility and part of the community for over 100 years, Icon Water is pleased to be supporting OzHarvest in their drive to feed those in need,” said Icon Water Managing Director, John Knox.

“Not only is water essential to human life, it is critical to food production. OzHarvest are redirecting food to those who need it and in turn reducing the wastage of both food and water,” he said.

World Food Day is celebrated each year on 16 October to promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all. “You can’t have food without water. For instance throwing away one burger wastes the same amount of water as a 90-minute shower,” said Dave Burnet, OzHarvest ACT and Territories Manager. “We are pleased that Icon Water shares our desire to help the community”, he said.

OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it directly to more than 1300 charities supporting people in need across the country.

In the ACT OzHarvest typically rescues between 9,000 and 10,000 kilograms of great produce and nonperishable food every week. Globally, one third of all food produced is lost or wasted. World Food Day events are organised in over 130 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar.

Icon Water will provide OzHarvest with $18,000 per year for the next three years to support this important community work.
