Leaving a nourishing legacy with a bequest for OzHarvest
by
You can help stop good food going to waste and make sure it gets to people in need by leaving a gift (bequest) to OzHarvest in your will. By becoming an OzHarvest Guardian, your legacy will nurture and protect the next generation and help OzHarvest ‘Nourish our Country’ when you are no longer here.
One day OzHarvest Founder and CEO, Ronni Kahn was stopped in the street by a woman who wanted to say a simple thank you. Not recognising her, Ronni replied, “Oh, thank you, but what did I do?” The woman talked about her son who for many years struggled at school. Times were hard at home and she found it difficult to make ends meet. This all changed, however, when they started to receive good food from OzHarvest. Her son could concentrate at school and only recently had just gone to university!
Sadly, there are over three million Australians who suffer from food insecurity every year, a quarter of them children.
If someone in your family was struggling to put food on the table or if one of your grandchildren was going to school or bed hungry, you would do something about it.
There are many people though who do not have the love, care and security of a family to help. Instead they rely on food relief and charity support. As Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, OzHarvest helps provide comfort in the form of fresh, nutritious food rescued from supermarkets, cafes, delis, airlines, restaurants and manufacturers across the country.
Every week OzHarvest rescues over 100 tonnes of food and redistributes it to over 1,000 charities. To date over 75 million meals have been delivered to help fill hungry bellies. It may be hard to believe in ‘the lucky country,’ but food relief is a serious issue and many charity agencies say they could take double the amount of food to meet demand.
‘Nourishing our Country’ is the driving purpose of OzHarvest, along with protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for the next generation. It’s impossible to learn and grow without consistent access to good food.
OzHarvest driver, Paul Keane has been delivering rescued food from airlines to schools for their Breakfast Clubs that help feed vulnerable students. The kids absolutely love the fresh juice and mini muesli bars and they run to greet him with beaming smiles when he arrives in his yellow OzHarvest van.
Bequests
If you are thinking of leaving a bequest but aren’t sure what the options are, be reassured that there are many ways you can leave a gift. A few examples that may suit your individual circumstances include:
- A specific sum of cash
- A percentage of your estate
- A gift of real estate or other specific bequest
- An investment such as stocks, bonds, shares or an artwork
- A residual gift (the balance of your estate after all other provisions have been met)
As an OzHarvest Guardian, your special gift will make a lasting difference and it doesn’t have to be large to make a valuable impact. For just one dollar, OzHarvest can provide two meals to people in need. By leaving a gift in your will, you will be giving children and their families hope for a healthier, happier future.
